A farewell to arms (PART 5)

Author Ernest Hemingway
Digital Publisher LeafyReads
Language English
Genre Love, Fiction
Added ON Feb 08, 2026

Summary

In the final part, Frederic Henry reunites with Catherine Barkley in Switzerland, where they live peacefully in the mountains, temporarily free from the war. Their life together is calm and intimate, and Frederic finds happiness and purpose in their shared isolation. Catherine becomes pregnant, and the couple hopes for a future together. However, this sense of peace is shattered when Catherine goes into labor. Complications arise during childbirth, and despite medical efforts, Catherine dies after delivering a stillborn baby. Frederic is left alone, devastated by loss and the cruel indifference of life. The novel ends with Frederic walking back to the hotel in the rain, symbolizing grief, loneliness, and the inevitability of suffering. The ending reinforces Hemingway’s themes of love, loss, and the harsh reality that neither war nor life offers lasting protection from pain.
